The city of Hartford will be welcoming artists from Africa, Europe, Latin America, Australia and the Caribbean!

Prior to the night of performances, there will be opening remarks made by President Jones of Trinity College in Cinestudios. In addition, the hip-hop Association will be presenting the film Hip-Hop Beyond Beats and Rhymes in which filmmaker Byron Hurt takes an in-depth look at manhood, sexism and homophobia in rap music and hip-hop Culture. This will be followed by a panel discussion.

Jeff Chang, author of 2005 American Book Award–winner Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop, will present his new book, Total Chaos: The Art And Aesthetics of Hip-hop. This event will include a panel comprised of contributors to the book such as Vijay Prashad of the Trinity International studies department, Juba Kalamka, a pioneer in the Bay Areas Homo-Hop movement, and Fable of the famous Rock Steady crew. |
There will also be a screening of the film Cuban HipHop: Desde el Principio followed by a panel discussion called Our Latin Thing: Hip-Hop Across the Americas. This panel will feature Marinieves Alba of International Hip-Hop Exchange (IHX); Loira Limbal (aka DJ Laylo), producer of "Estilo Hip-Hop”; Ariel Fernandez (aka "DJ Asho"), a DJ and cultural critic from Havana, Cuba; Vanessa Diaz, a documentary producer; and LF, a MC/Hip-hop Activist from Sao Paulo, Brasil; as well as other guests.

The film and lecture series will be accompanied by a break dance workshop presented by The Underground Coalition in which break-dancers from the Hartford area will teach the art and history of break dancing. There will also be a graffiti workshop hosted by a group of graffiti artists from the Trust Your Hustle Tour. During the graffiti workshop students will have the unique opportunity to learn how make mural painting from artists who have toured the country constructing murals and educating people about graffiti, the fifth element of hip-hop. Following these events will be the night of performances.

A panel discussion on campus climate will take place in the Gallows Hill Lounge. We will hear from representatives from various social and cultural organizations. All are welcome to attend. Following the discussion, there will be a campus-wide block party and barbeque.
